The watch movement has been serviced. A typical service consists of completely stripping the watch down, cleaning in an ultrasonic bath and all jewels and pivot holes cleaned with peg wood. It is then inspected and any worn or damaged parts are replaced, the main spring is removed cleaned and oiled, if worn or set it will be replaced, if this is the case it will be stated, the movement is then reassembled oiled and adjusted so that it keeps good time. I have tested this watch for over a week and it has kept excellent time.
I spend many hours working on these watches to ensure they are running at their best, a service such as this could cost £150 or more if you were to pay for it.
The watch as seen in the photos will include a presentation box and a complementary watch chain.
This is a high grade adjusted movement and a private label made by waltham for Thomas Russel of Liverpool and as such it is quite rare.
The watch is running with a true and flat balance motion with good amplitude in all positions. The balance is a cut compensating bimetallic balance with a blued over coil Breguet type hair spring, with screwed in weights in the balance rim and mean time adjusting screws in the balance arms and temperature adjusting screws also in the balance rim. The jewel mounts are raised and screw set, the watch is keeping excellent time, please note a mechanical watch will not keep time as a quartz watch will. The movement is a bridge plate, in a nickel finish with beautiful damascening on the bridge plates with a bright steel crown and ratchet wheels with all the black inlay paint intact. It has a Church 1892 or star wheel style regulator for fine adjustment of the time, which is central on the balance cock just where it should be. A very nice looking movement complete with its dust ring around the movement.
The dial is in glass enamel and is double sunk at the centre and 6 oclock position, it has Waltham written in script, the dial is in Arabic numerals which are in an unusual slightly smaller font, this dial is typical of the private label watches made by Waltham for Thomas Russel, there is a minute track in the outer chapter with the sub seconds at the 6 oclock position. The dial is unmarked not a chip, scratch, or hairline to be seen, it is in excellent condition.
The hands are a matched set in blued steel, they are very fine slim hands in the spade and whip style and are also in excellent condition.
The case is a Fortune case with the winged wheel logo as seen on the inside of the rear cover and is in gold fill guaranteed for 20 years from new. It is smooth polished both rear covers open and close down tight, the front springs open to 90 degrees. when the crown is pressed down, on a good fly spring, the crown winds the watch and raises to set the time and functions as it should The case shows a little light pocket wear and one or two very small dings which are quite hard to see but nothing more, there is no wear through or scrapes, the bow is taut and retains position, all in all a very nice and usable case.
The crystal is clear and free from scratches.
I try to give an honest and accurate description, please look at the photos as they form part of it.
